Brockenhurst is the largest village, by population, in the New Forest National Park, Hampshire. It is situated on the River Lymington, lying midway between Southampton and Lymington and sitting on the A35, between Lymington and Lyndhurst. Brockenhurst enjoys two railway stations nearby (Brockenhurst and Sway) with connections to London Waterloo. Southampton is a short 13-mile drive away, also accessible by train.
The settlement was built on top of an ancient fortification known as Burgh Castle, but its position overlooking the River Lymington quickly acquired the name Brockenhurst, which means 'stronghold on the hill'. Over the years, Brockenhurst has grown from a small hamlet to today's substantially sized village. The town is set on a hilltop and has many beautiful views of the surrounding countryside.
Brockenhurst's history is steeped in agriculture and farming; however, this has not stopped it from becoming one of the most desirable places to live in the UK, named by the Sunday Times as being one of the top 10 places to live in England (2020) as well as The Telegraph's best places to raise a family in 2018.
With a population of 9,000, Brockenhurst is home to two schools, a cinema, a theatre and a library. In addition to being a small market town, you can also expect a high street full of shops and markets. With much change and development over the years, Brockenhurst is a popular tourist destination, with easy access to various outdoor activities, allowing you to cycle, ride, run or walk through some of the finest countrysides in England.
